O Mistress Mine Closes; Vintage Stores Struggle to Stay in Business

< href="">

Vintage stores are struggling to stay open. The latest victim is East Village vintage store O Mistress Mine, which closed yesterday after 40 years in business. The shop's owner, Wanda Hanlon, operated the store in two different Manhattan locations during its tenure, but it became too expensive to continue and she is moving the store to Hoboken. Sadly for the vintage market of New York City, this story keeps repeating itself. Hairy Mary's, Love Saves the Day, and Poppet all shuttered in 2009. And now, more are on the way out. Cherry shop is leaving its West Village location at the end of January. Atomic Passion is also nearing its end: Co-owner Justin Vogel admitted that if the landlord doesn’t lower the rent at the East 9th Street store, he may have to close next month. So if you want to do some vintage shopping, go now, before another store disappears.
